About Jinja town

Jinja town is the second-largest and beautiful city in Uganda. Jinja’s name originates from two tribal groups of people (Baganda and Basoga) who were leaving on either side of the River around the year 1906. During 1906 the town was considered a fishing village to the locals who benefited from fishing and long-distance trade routes.

The two tribes (Baganda and Basoga) had almost similar languages, and the more powerful and determined Baganda had an enormous influence over the Basoga. The town was called the ‘Place of Rocks’ or ‘The Place of Flat Rocks’. The word to define stones or rocks in the language of the Baganda people is ‘Ejjinja’, and in the Basoga language dialect this to Edinda. From there the British used the reference to come up with a name established to “Jinja”
