TOURIST INFLUX REALISED IN THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON

This Christmas season, Uganda has incurred a big inflow of tourists.

This was evidenced by the over bookings that are experienced by hotel rooms as well as flights.

This tourism boom has been due to the enhanced security, better image-building and advanced improvements in hotel facilities.

When interviewed to comment about the present hotel bookings, Mani Khan the director for tourism of the Madhvani Group, which runs Paara and Mweya safari lodges said they have sold out their rooms and they are fully booked for 3 weeks. He applauded that this is a better season as compared to last year because in the past they had been receiving NGOs but now they are mainly foreign tourists for the tourism purpose mostly coming from USA, UK, Germany, and Netherlands.

Airlines, too, are fully booked. “Each of our incoming flights have an average of 40 to 50 passengers more than the same period last year,” said

Pierre De Clercq of SN Brussels Airlines also commented that they have realized an improvement in the incoming flights average of 40 to 50 passengers as compared to last year. He also applauded that since last year, the flights are 100% fully booked. He added that the cheap fares and the seats reserved for groups were sold out six months earlier. This is an implication that tourism is booming in Uganda

KLM, which has just started operating a direct line Amsterdam-Entebbe, and British Airways also confirmed their flights are packed, with long waiting lists.
KLM and British airways also acknowledged that their flights are packed with long waiting lists. Sabiti Kainembabazi of British Airways also affirmed that flights from London are fully booked.

Added to the increasing airlines developing in Uganda, the influx of tourists and travelers to Uganda in this festive season is a climax that acknowledges tourism development. This influx is also owed to the beautiful nature of Uganda, the biodiversity that is flora and fauna, the Cultural and historical site , and also the recreation that Uganda’s tourism industry has.

ICAA ISSUES OUT NEW AIRLINE SAFETY TEMPORARY REGULATIONS

In a bid to protect airlines from fanatic attacks, the international civil aviation organization (ICAO) has issued out new rules. These guidelines are for testing gels, aerosols in hand luggage and liquids that may be used in ad hoc explosive devices on board in aircrafts.

In a speech briefing about these new rules, Roberto Kobeh González, ICAO’s Council president said the ICAO group of specialists is working upon the improvement of technologies for detecting all the necessary material with certain physical properties that could be used in explosive.

He added that only 1 bag per passenger will be acceptable but only one bag per passenger would be permitted, save for baby milk or foods, medications, and special nutritional requirements.

These new enhancements have been adopted after the new measures were adopted by ICAO after a disenchanted terrorist plot on August 9, 2006 in the United Kingdom to detonate some 10 trans-Atlantic flights.

To ease screening, the plastic bags holding liquid containers have to be handed in separately from other cabin baggage, coats and jackets or laptops.

Recommendations are to be implemented no later than March 1, 2007, and ICAO’s aviation security panel would keep on revising overall list of prohibited items for Council appraisal in June.

ICAO’s body is based in Montreal, Canada, and it had restricted liquids to containers of not more than 100 milliliters placed in a re-sealable transparent plastic bag, which should be completely closed.

LAKE VICTORIA LEVELS IMPROVE

Uganda’s meteologigical Department has detected a rise in the lake victoria water levels. The increase in water levels is because of the contrinuous rains that have been experienced occassionally since early November in most parts of East Africa.

The rains are anticipated to extend up to early february as opposed to what was prior anticipated.

Once these rains continue, the levels of Lake victoria will increase.

In 2004, a decrease in the water levels of L.victoria was realised and this caused a tremediuos effect especially on the manufacturing industries and costs of living.

The improvement in the water levels will improve on electricity supply and hence development.
