Day 1: pickup and transfer to volcanoes national park

On your arrival, you will meet up with our guide who will brief you about your 4 days gorilla safari and transfer you to volcanoes national park in Ruhengeri in the far northwest of Rwanda. Check into your hotel ,have dinner and rest

Day 2: gorilla tracking

After your hearty breakfast, meet the park rangers at the briefing center to brief you about the guidelines for gorilla tracking. With your packed lunch proceed head out into the forest to meet these incredible primates. You are to spend 1 hour with the mountain gorilla after finding them and only 8 people per group are accepted to track.

You should maintain the rules and guidelines as mentioned in the briefing when you are with the gorillas. After your trek go back to the lodge and freshen up as you relax at the lodge for the evening. Dinner and overnight

Day 3: Dian Fossey’s grave/golden monkey

Wake up to an early morning breakfast and prepare for a hike to Dian Fossey’s grave. She was an American primatologist and anthropologist who dedicated her life to the conservation of the Mountain Gorilla by conducting an 18 year ample study about the auspicious ape from 1966 until her death in 1985. Another optional activity you can opt for is golden monkey tracking as they are also present in the volcanoes national park.

Day 4: Kigali city tour and departure

Have a hefty breakfast and get ready to set off to Kigali city for a tour in this stunning city that has a lot of memorable attractions to offer. After touring the city then proceed to the airport for your return flight.

Gorilla trekking rules for your 4 days gorilla trekking safari

Before Encountering the Gorilla
Always follow the guide’s instruction because the guides steer the national park every day and therefore are aware and understand every part of the forest.
b) Always stay in the tourist tracking groups especially while in the forest to evade getting lost.
c) Avoid making a lot of noise as it can engross the mountain gorilla and other wildlife species in the forest.
d) Avoid littering any rubbish in the national park.
e) Do not track when sick.
On Encounter with the Mountain Gorilla
a) Always keeping a rational distance away from the mountain gorillas at least 7 meters.
b) Not using flash photography while taking photos of the mountain gorillas as it may infuriate them.
c) Minimizing noises until you are at least about 200 meters from the gorillas.
d) Avoid eating in the charisma of the mountain gorillas.
e) Do not touch the mountain gorillas. When they come towards your way, just linger where you are and shun a direct eye contact with the gorillas.
f) Do not imitate the mountain gorilla behavior like beating the chest because it might send the wrong message to the mountain gorillas.
Tourists are allowed to be in the presence of the mountain gorillas for strictly one hour, which is intentional to minimize chances of disease, spread from the human’s to mountain gorillas. There are high odds of disease broaden from humans to the gorillas because about 98%of their DNA is analogous to humans.
What to wear to on your 4ssss days gorilla trekking safari
• Have a small backpack as it is helpful to carry your water, packed lunch, camera and binoculars.
• You need light weight hiking boots for this activity/strong waterproof walking boots due to nature and altitude of the forest.
• Take a light jumper and lightweight breathable waterproof jacket/trousers as temperature is erratic and weather conditions can change
• Lightweight long wool socks which are comfy for a mountain tropical forest
• A few long-sleeved shirts/trousers. Please make sure that you trek in your long sleeved trousers/shirts to avoid insects such as safari ants entering your trousers.
• Sweater for cool evenings and frosty mornings due to nature and altitude of the place
• Bush hat with a rim for sun protection. Please carry a hat to guard you from the strong sun rays if it is hot.
• You may also need to carry some Sunglasses too with neck band
• Sun cream is also essential
• Video/photo camera, extra lenses and Reserve batteries. Photography is an important element of your safari and make sure that you have your camera ready, charge your batteries very well and if necessary, carry extra batteries as you will require taking many photographs in the one hour you will have with these rare mountain gorillas.
• Insect repellants to protect you from Mosquito bites as volcanoes is a tropical forest so many insects are accommodated there in.
• Garden gloves that will protect you from germs and other items that may scuff your hands.
• Binoculars. Don’t forget that you are on safari and you want to have clear views of everything so during your trek in search for the extraordinary mountain gorillas, you will have a chance to blemish some other wildlife species like birds, primates and large mammals
• A glove to grasp vegetation and it’s also best to have different layers of clothes since the temperatures tend to change.
• Energy Giving snacks. Gorilla trekking can take from 30 minutes to eight or more hours and that’s why a certain level of fitness is required and energy giving snacks plus lots of drinking water as a supplement
• Hiring Porters for your gorilla safari is a top tip -You will need a porter to give you a push on the way to the gorillas as trekking/hiking can take some time.
